How much does it cost to join? To compete? To travel?

Membership can be billed as a one-time payment of $200/Semester. It will be billed sometime after the second month of the semester, giving you plenty of time to decide if you would like to continue with the sport.

We recommend bringing extra money to tournaments as there is usually a ~$20-30 entrance fee. We also recommend bringing extra money on trips for food/miscellaneous items.

Is Fencing safe?

Provided that you wear the required gear in the correct manner, there is no serious risk. Fencing gear is specially designed to protect you from serious injury.

What should I bring for my first competition?

We recommend checking out a pair of knickers for the tournament.

Besides equipment, we recommend bringing plenty of snacks and water. Also bring money to check in at the venue (usually around $20). And bring money for dinner with the team after the competition.

How do I check out club gear?

Talk with the officers or Coach Jay. You will have to sign a form and your transaction will be recorded. You are responsible for keeping the team's equipment in a clean and usable condition. If the gear malfunctions, breaks, or gets lost, please contact the officers. Remember the serial numbers of all your equipment.

Should I buy my own gear? And how/where?

We recommend waiting a semester before purchasing your own gear. Equipment can be very expensive.

Once you're ready for a purchase, we recommend buying from an online retailer such as Absolute Fencing or Leon Paul. AF is cheaper and offers the bare minimum. If you want to buy individual parts instead of a full kit, you should start with a mask and glove, as they are the dirtiest parts of the outfit. Otherwise, we recommend getting a basic starter kit containing a mask, epee, glove, jacket, knickers, and tall socks. This shouldn't cost more than $200 from AF.

Can I store my gear in my dorm?

You can store everything except for your swords on campus. We ask that you store your swords off campus please. WCF isn't permitted to allow its members to store their swords on campus. You may store them at Stillpoint Fencing if you wish, but clearly label your swords as yours.

Can I fence on campus?

Please refrain from dueling or fencing people outside of official practice/tournaments. Fencing in public can be dangerous to not only the people around you, but school property as well. Your actions don't just reflect on you, they reflect on the club.
